Climate Media Factory – we develop scientifically sound and entertaining climate media and climate services

The Climate Media Factory UG (haftungsbeschränkt) was founded in 2011 and has its roots in a joint project of the Film University Babelsberg "Konrad Wolf" and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). We offer a broad variety of products, such as animated movies, documentations, apps, education and training tools and web-based climate services and consultancy.

We tackle the challenges in science communication through an integrated media creation process that immanently involves both climate scientists as well as media experts. As a critical dialogue partner, we created award-winning solutions for the science-society and the science-policy interface together with governmental and scientific institutions, business clients and NGOs.

Jürgen P. Kropp

CEO

Jürgen P. Kropp is director (CEO) and founder of the Climate Media Factory. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics and is a professor for Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the University of Potsdam. At Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) he acts as deputy chair of Research Domain II and coincidentally heads the research area on Climate Change and Development. Together with K.D. Müller he developed the idea that climate science needs smart communication strategies when it likes to approach policy makers and lay people. This idea was the origin of the successful CMF. Apart from Jürgen's role at CMF his role at PIK is devoted to systematic transition and city research. He is also a member of several scientific advisory boards and appointed editor of a couple of scientific journals.

Earthbook

“Earthbook” is a short animation produced for "The Year of Science“ to raise awareness for the topics of sustainability among digital natives. What would Planet Earth post about humans on its profile? The Earth fast forwards through a virtual relationship with humans - but soon starts to ask itself whether it wants to be friends with a species that exploits its national resources.

In the first three weeks the animation received more than 250,000 clicks on Youtube and has been commented more than 1,700 times. It was nominated for Deauville Green Award 2013. Earthbook was shown at Guerilla Science Festival, at international short film festival berlin 2013 and at Greenstormin Film Festival 2014 in Freiburg. The animation was also part of official selection of San Francisco Green Festival 2014.

Outlaws in Air City

A monster western about co-benefits of improving air quality and mitigating climate change. Direct local benefits from CO2 reductions could be a good argument for mitigation measures in local policy discourse in spite of the free riding problem with mitigation.

"Outlaws in Air City" was shown at the film festival Deauville Green Awards in 2013 and at Greenstorming Film Festival in 2014.

Engineering the Climate?

Building artificial trees, fertilizing the ocean to remove CO2 from the air, and injecting sulphur into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight - these technological solutions are not taken from science fiction, they are actually being discussed seriously. And at first glance it seems that they could work, quick and clean. But simple solutions often have complicated impacts. A reality check.

Towards Low-Carbon Prosperity

Documentation International Symposium, 9 May 2012, Berlin

The transformation to a low-carbon society has become the prerequisite for the future of modern industrial society. The governments of many countries have already started with the decarbonisation of their economies. The symposium of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) presents a variety of important international approaches to decarbonisation at the highest level of expertise and will work out respective advantages and disadvantages. An entertaining and summarising documentation of this high level symposium.

We know enough about climate change - it's time for decisions now!

The extent and the impacts of climate change are not known precisely. It highly depends on our decisions in the coming years. The animations explains why we have to reduce green house gas emissions immediately and adapt to the impacts of climate change today.

To this day the pencil animation is the first place on the Youtube channel of the GIZ. It has been translated into eleven languages and won the Deauville Green Award 2012 in silver. The film premiered in 2011 on a GIZ-Workshop at the UN-Climate Conference in Durban, South Africa.
